This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

The Yazoo mystery; a novel Irving Craddock Books

I began reading this mystery novel because I hoped that the title referred to the Yazoo River or Yazoo City, Mississippi. It does not. In fact, I'm not sure what the title means. I remember one reference to the Yazoo Station on the Mississippi River. Gulfport, Mississippi does make a minor appearance in the story. The action occurs primarily in New Orleans circa 1917. The mystery itself concerns large quantities of food missing from railroad cars. As there is a war on and the meat is needed for the war effort, the government is concerned about the thefts.

Originally published in 1919, the novel reflects the attitudes, sentiments and beliefs of the day but no so strongly as to deter a modern reader. The main problem is that the plot relies heavily on the unlikely confluence of people and events. I also thought the ending to be weak. For instance, there is never an explanation as to whether or not the railroad clerk, Burrell, is involved in the crime.

The Yazoo mystery; a novel Irving Craddock Books Reviews

I found it a bit tedious. The frequent references to physiology and character were offensive to me, not to mention the abject prejudice. Of course I realize this was the predominant perspective of the times but the storyline was not believable either. Young white extremely privileged man makes good.
Yawn. Maybe it made a popular serial in BOY'$ LIFE.
It was mannered and predictable, but I kept reading as it was an old fashioned tale with some charming bits..
I am not done yet it is good so far very enjoyable and I can't wait to finish the book
Loved this! A nostalgic look at times gone by... couldn't put it down!
This was another whim purchase, and again I am wowed by the characters and the story. Kind of Horatio Alger and Jane Austin meet in New Orleans. Enjoyed every word.
I had never heard of this author before, but decided to try it simply because of the name. As it turns out, it's a good story even if some of it is fairly predictable.
